FAMILY CAR CAMPING · WARM, RAINY WEATHER

Which Family Tent Should You Choose for Warm, Rainy Weather?

Make room for everyone to sleep, change clothes and keep wet shoes and bags away from bedding.

Quick answer: For family camping in warm, rainy weather, plan for both time spent inside during rain and drying the tent after the trip. If you often move on after one night, start by comparing polyester tents, which generally dry faster. For several nights at one campsite, polycotton is worth considering if you can manage the weight and have room to dry it thoroughly. With either fabric, confirm how to maintain ventilation when rain requires closing doors and windows, and reserve a separate spot for wet footwear and bags. Read waterproof ratings for the roof, walls and floor separately: a high floor rating does not tell you how the whole tent handles rain.

If you want to arrange sleeping pads and walkways yourself, start with the C5, which has no center pole. For a polycotton bell tent, compare the LIGHT 400 for lower weight or the LIGHT 500 for a larger footprint. For a polyester outer tent with separate sleeping and gear areas, explore the BOUNDLESS X6.

FIND YOUR FAMILY’S FIT

Start with the Way Your Family Camps

When rain brings everyone back inside, children need to change clothes, and wet shoes and backpacks need somewhere to go. The space left after the beds are down—and where you can dry the tent after the trip—often matter more than the sleeping-capacity label.

What matters most to your family? Start with The benefit and the trade-off
Arranging sleeping pads, bags and walkways your own way C5 — Preorder → Cabin layout with no center pole; two adults are recommended for setup
A polycotton bell tent for several nights at one campsite LIGHT 400 → 7 kg lighter than the 500; check your bedding layout and drying space
More room for gear and activity around the sleeping area LIGHT 500 → A larger tent also needs more space for transport, pitching and drying
Polyester fabric with separate sleeping and gear areas BOUNDLESS X6 → Bedroom + Living Room layout; use independently or connect to a compatible vehicle

If you change campsites every day and prioritize low weight and quick packing, check the handling and setup requirements of all four options carefully. Polyester generally dries more readily, but the X6's fabric alone does not make the entire tent quicker to pack.

Pitched dimensions are not the same as usable interior space. Allow for poles, sloping walls and a clear entrance when planning beds.

FLEXIBLE CABIN LAYOUT

C5: Keep the Center Clear for Family Life

Green · Preorder

When children are changing clothes and someone is sorting bags, one less pole in the middle means one less obstacle to work around. The C5's cabin structure and two doors suit families who want to arrange sleeping space, gear and access around their own equipment.

Four mesh windows provide ventilation openings, and the side windows have full zipper closures. For rainy trips, confirm which openings can remain in use when the side windows need to close, and follow the tent's setup instructions.

Before you choose: Check your bedding dimensions, arrange for two adults to set up, and review the delivery timing for the green preorder version.

A LIGHTER BELL TENT OPTION

LIGHT 400: Settle In for a Few Nights with Less Weight to Move

Grey

If you like a bell tent and plan to stay at one campsite for several nights, start by comparing the 400. It weighs 28 kg, which is 7 kg less than the 500, and packs to 92 × 40 × 32 cm. Check that packed size against the space available in your vehicle.

The LIGHT has a protective flap over the entry zipper and covers over its three roof vents. A clear panel in the front door lets you see outside while the door is closed, preserving the view when you spend time inside during rain.

Before you choose: Try your bedding and gear layout using the steps below. Account for the center pole, sloping walls and walkways, and make sure you have room to dry the tent after the trip.

LIGHT series exterior. See the comparison above for 400 and 500 dimensions.

MORE ROOM AT BASECAMP

LIGHT 500: Choose More Space When It Is Worth the Extra Weight

Grey

If your planned layout leaves too little room for family activity in the 400, compare the 500. The larger tent also adds to the load: it weighs 35 kg and packs to 92 × 47 × 34 cm.

The 500 shares the same covered roof vents and protective entry zipper flap as the 400. Space and handling are the clearest reasons to choose between the two sizes; a larger tent is not automatically more rain-resistant.

Before you choose: Check space for both the tent and its guy lines, the distance from your parking spot to the pitch, and where you will spread it out to dry.

POLYESTER + SEPARATE SPACES

BOUNDLESS X6: Choose Polyester with Separate Space for Sleep and Gear

Grey

Shoes and bags brought in during rain do not have to pile up beside the sleeping pads. The X6 has a Bedroom + Living Room layout and a removable inner tent, helping you assign separate places for sleeping and gear. It can be pitched independently or connected to a compatible vehicle.

Feature BOUNDLESS X6
Pitched dimensions 475 × 290 × 230 cm
Weight and packed size 19 kg; 75 × 35 × 30 cm packed
Main fabric Polyester outer and inner tents; Oxford fabric floor
Before you choose Allow for its large footprint; confirm vehicle compatibility if connecting it to your car

Before you choose: Check both campsite and vehicle storage space. If you plan to connect the tent to your vehicle, confirm the fit and attachment method. Polyester generally dries more readily than polycotton, but the X6 still needs to be fully dried before storage.

PLAN AROUND YOUR REAL GEAR

LIGHT 400 or 500? Let Your Actual Gear Decide

Plan for bedding, bags and walkways together. Start with three checks:

  1. Measure your equipment. Record the length, width and height of your sleeping pads or cots, then list the bags and storage boxes you want inside.
  2. Try the arrangement at home. Lay out the sleeping and gear areas on an open floor. Leave room for people to walk, change clothes and reach their belongings.
  3. Check the tent's usable space. Confirm interior dimensions, pole and entrance positions, and clearance at the height of your beds before deciding that the arrangement will fit.

For example, three 65 × 200 cm sleeping pads placed side by side occupy 195 × 200 cm before adding bags or a walkway. That is an equipment-footprint example, not confirmation that the arrangement fits a particular tent.

If the 400 accommodates your checked layout, it gives you less weight to move. If you need more room, compare the 500. Raised cots need particular attention to clearance along sloping walls.

AFTER THE RAIN

Polyester or Polycotton? Think About Packing Up After Rain

For otherwise similar tents, polyester is generally lighter and easier to dry. Polycotton generally offers better fabric breathability, with more weight and a greater drying burden. Coatings and vent design also affect the experience.

Swipe to compare all columns →

What matters to you? Polyester Polycotton
Carrying and loading Usually lighter in similar constructions; still check the complete tent's weight Usually heavier in similar constructions
Ventilation in warm weather Waterproof coatings can restrict fabric breathability, making vents especially important The fabric is generally more breathable, but openings are still needed for airflow
Drying after rain Generally dries more readily Usually needs more time and space to dry thoroughly

The X6 offers a polyester option. The C5 combines a polycotton roof with polyester sidewalls, while the LIGHT uses a polycotton outer tent. If you often pack up wet or have limited drying space at home, make drying arrangements part of the buying decision. No tent fabric should be stored wet for an extended period.

KNOW WHAT THE RATINGS TELL YOU

What Should You Check Before a Rainy Trip?

Read waterproof ratings for the roof, walls and floor separately. The outer tent sheds rain from above and the sides. The floor meets damp ground and bears localized pressure from people and equipment.

  • C5: The roof is rated 450 mm; the sidewalls and floor are PU3000 mm. One number cannot describe the entire tent.
  • LIGHT: The 10000 mm rating applies to the floor. It does not establish the roof's rain performance.
  • X6: Both outer tent and floor are PU3000 mm. Door, window and seam protection still need separate consideration.

A millimeter rating generally describes a fabric's resistance to water pressure under specified test conditions. It is not a rainfall amount or a promise of how many hours the tent can stay in rain.

These fabric ratings are not enough to determine which model is better for prolonged rain. Before buying, confirm which vents may remain open in wet weather and how to use the doors, windows and roof covers. A covered opening should not automatically be left open in wind-driven rain.

For a trip with prolonged rain in the forecast, ask:

  • Which vents can remain in use after closing doors and windows facing the rain?
  • How should roof covers, zipper flaps and guy lines be set up? Are additional accessories required?
  • Are there model-specific rain tests or instructions that explain the conditions and limitations?

GOOD TO KNOW

Frequently Asked Questions

Do water droplets inside mean the tent is leaking?

They may be condensation. Warm, moist air can form droplets when it meets a cooler tent wall. Consider where the water appears, whether it is entering through a seam or opening, and the ventilation conditions at the time.

Does a four-to-six-person rating guarantee a comfortable family setup?

A capacity label cannot replace a layout check. Bedding, bags and walkways all take up space, while bell tents also have a center pole and sloping walls. Plan around the equipment your family actually uses.

Does the X6 have to stay connected to a vehicle?

No. The X6 can be pitched independently. For connected use, confirm your vehicle's fit, attachment points and setup requirements. The term “SUV tent” does not mean it fits every vehicle.

What if the tent is still wet when we leave?

If you have to pack it wet, spread it out again as soon as practical. Clean it according to the care instructions and dry it completely before long-term storage. Polyester tents need this step too.

Is the LIGHT's extension canopy included?

The extension canopy is sold separately. Tables, chairs and other items shown in lifestyle photos may also be separate purchases. Check the product page's included-accessories list before ordering.

Q&A

Q: Does the highback chair feel like it forces your chin down towards your chest?

A: No, it allows your head and neck to relax

Q: Will these chairs work for sitting on a hill, like a lawn concert venue, or a baseball game?

A: Yes the event I went to was on lawn concert venue with a slight slope. The chair was comfortable. I liked the cup holder.

Q: Can this chair be carried backpack style? it says it has straps but in the picture it is only carried over one shoulder?

A: I don't think so, only one shoulder to carry it. Around 10-12 lbs. Very easy to set it up and fold it back. We like it. Very comfortable to sit on it.

Q: Does the high back require additional assembly?

A: It's easy to assemble. You unfold and put the 2 back poles in the slots until they click. Super easy to fold up too.

Q: Would this chair be a good size for a 5 year old?

A: Due to it being low to the ground, I believe it would. Their legs would stick straight out due to the depth of the seat but I wouldn't consider that a problem with a 5 year old.

Q: Are the arm rests comfortable? Usable?

A: The arm rests are surrounded by foam. Yes, comfortable and usable.

Worth every penny!

At first I thought these chairs were expensive for what they are, but after reading other reviews singing their praises I decided to give them a try. It was a great decision; these chairs are worth the hype! They are very comfortable, and the high back design makes it so my spouse & I (6’5” and 6’0”) can lean back and still easily be able to rest our heads on the seat back comfortably. The chairs are easy to assemble and are sturdy. The low design means you’re close to the ground (usually not great when you are really tall) but the chairs so comfortable once sitting in it you won’t want to get up. Highly recommend!

Perfect toe- dippin pool chairs!

Having a pool comes with entertaining friends and family. People were always stealing patio cushions to sit near the deep end to get their toes wet, and the comfort of those seats were severely lacking. I seatched around a bit snd ordered this little guys, and I am thrilled with how perfect they fit the bill for what I needed. Can pack them away when not in use, and they can easily be moved to wherever we need them- including the fire-pit in the cooler months.

Perfect for vacations, light enough to pack.

We just bought these in time to put in our luggage for Maui. We love them, perfect for the beach! Easy to carry, lightweight, probably lighter than my purse. Does not sink into the sand, super comfortable. Highly recommend!

Love em.. but one suggestion

These chairs are excellent, we absolutely love them and have had for 2 or 3 years now, but they should be made from aluminum. Any product designed for the beach will be exposed to salt, and we all know what happens with salt and Steel. Otherwise they are great,

Solid chairs

I like the quality construction in a beach chair that could be folded up in a space saving bag…unlike other two dimensional folding beach chairs. The drink holder and pouch for suntan lotion was a nice touch.

Thank you for the great review, Curtis! We’re thrilled to hear you appreciate the quality construction and thoughtful design of the KingCamp High Mesh Back Beach Folding Chair. The space-saving bag, drink holder, and pouch for sunscreen are definitely convenient features for a day at the beach. We’re glad it worked well for you, and we hope it continues to enhance your beach days!

Mark

I used them for a week and they ripped in the seams. I liked the chair’s design. I wish they held together better. I’m 5’8” and I weight 190 lbs. these chairs should have supported me. I never fell into them too hard and they were on sand.

Really comfortable chair. It is difficult to get it back into the bag.

This seems like a very sturdy and comfortable chair. You have to snap the headrest in after you open it, but thats a minor issue. The shorter one does not need to snap the head and neck support piece in, but then again, there is no head or neck support. Its a trade-off. The only thing I dont like about it is that it is difficult to get it back into the bag. Why do they make these bags so small? Seems a little bit silly.

Love it!!!

I love these. They are so easy to set up and take down. Slip easily back into their bags. Rinse easy and dry quickly. Just wish the cup holder was a bit sturdier. My drinks always look like they are about fall out.

This is the perfect chair.

This is the perfect chair. I love this chair. My sisters each have one and I was always borrowing theirs so I ordered my own. It folds up easily is very comfortable, and high enough in the back to have my head rest against something salad. Solid. It is constructed well and the material is nice and heavy in that it will last a long time. It folds up easily and sets up easily. Like generally sitting in a little bit of water when we use them it dries quickly doesn鈥檛 look stained and stays nice and clean. This chair along with an umbrella is perfect for sitting at the lake, the river and the beach. I love it!

Incredible

If you're looking for a great beach chair that is fully of features, this is it. Very comfortable with it's tall back and screen like back it keeps you relaxed all day. Only recommendation is the to have deep cup holders as they won't support a bottle of water. Would definitely buy again.
