TL;DR — Choose the fabric for the way you camp.
340 GSM fabric has about 62% more mass per square meter than 210 GSM fabric. It is a sensible option to consider when you want a substantial canvas shelter and can manage the transport and care involved. A 210 GSM fabric reduces the fabric contribution to weight, which matters when you load, pitch and pack often.
But GSM alone does not tell you whole-tent weight, tear strength, waterproofness or the temperature inside. For car camping, compare the complete tent’s weight and packed size, ventilation, usable room and drying requirements before choosing. In KingCamp’s current range, the KHAN 340GSM offers two clearly specified sizes; the KHAN VILLA 3-in-1 Family Glamping Bundle lists a 210g TC tent and adds bedding.
What do 210 GSM and 340 GSM actually mean?
GSM means grams per square meter of fabric. A one-square-meter sample of 210 GSM fabric weighs 210 grams; the same area of 340 GSM fabric weighs 340 grams. Neither number is the weight of the complete tent.
Polycotton, also called TC, combines polyester and cotton. However, two TC fabrics can differ in blend ratio, yarn, weave and treatment. Check whether a supplier’s quoted weight describes the base fabric or the finished, treated material before making a precise comparison.
Three specifications answer different questions:
| Specification | What it measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| GSM, such as 210 or 340 g/m² | Fabric mass per unit area | Complete tent weight or tested durability |
| Denier, such as 210D | Yarn or filament linear mass: grams per 9,000 meters | GSM, weave density or waterproofness |
| Hydrostatic head, stated in mm | Water pressure resisted by a fabric under a specified test | Leak-free seams, a storm rating or whole-tent performance |
A 210D floor and a 210 GSM tent body are therefore different specifications, even though both contain “210.” Read the material name and the component alongside the number.
How much extra weight does 340 GSM add?
For an equal 10 m² sample of fabric, the calculation is straightforward:
| Equal fabric area | 210 GSM | 340 GSM |
|---|---|---|
| 1 m² | 0.21 kg | 0.34 kg |
| 10 m² | 2.10 kg | 3.40 kg |
| Difference for 10 m² | — | 1.30 kg more |
The increase is (340 − 210) ÷ 210 × 100, or approximately 61.9%. That is extra fabric mass, not a percentage increase in strength, warmth or service life.
To estimate a fabric-only difference, multiply 0.13 kg by the actual square meters of material being compared. Do not use the tent’s floor area as a shortcut: roof panels, walls, doors, openings and overlaps change the material area. Floors, poles, stakes, zippers and bags also contribute to the complete product weight.
210 vs. 340 GSM: the practical differences
| Buying consideration | 210 GSM polycotton | 340 GSM polycotton | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handling | Less fabric mass for the same area | More fabric mass to lift and move | Complete weight, bag dimensions and who will carry it |
| Fabric feel | Can feel less substantial in comparable construction | Can have a heavier hand and drape | Fabric sample, weave and finish; GSM does not directly measure thickness |
| Hot-weather comfort | Can be comfortable with effective airflow | Can also be comfortable with effective airflow | Mesh area, vent position, shade and openings usable in rain |
| Cold-weather comfort | GSM does not establish an overnight temperature rating | Higher mass does not establish an insulation rating | Shelter design, ventilation and weather-appropriate sleeping equipment |
| Durability | Lower mass is not evidence of poor construction | Worth considering for a substantial shelter, but strength still needs evidence | Tear and abrasion data, seams, reinforcement, poles and repair support |
| Rain protection | Depends on fabric treatment and construction | Also depends on treatment and construction | Body and floor specifications, seams and setup instructions |
| Drying and storage | Do not assume a fixed drying time | Do not assume a fixed drying time or automatic mold resistance | Actual wetness, airflow, humidity and space to spread the tent out |
These are selection principles, not results from a controlled test of two otherwise identical KingCamp tents. Changing the tent’s design as well as its fabric means you are comparing complete shelters, not isolating one material variable.
Will 340 GSM feel more comfortable inside?
In summer, look at the openings before the fabric weight
Picture arriving at a sunny campsite in the early afternoon. A heavy canvas roof cannot supply moving air by itself. Check whether you can open opposing sides, release warmer air through upper vents and retain insect protection while doing so.
The KingCamp KHAN 340GSM TC Canvas 4-Season Bell Tent lists roll-up outer walls, mesh panels and top ventilation windows, giving you several ways to adjust airflow. Their usefulness depends on the pitch, breeze and weather: a wall you must close against wind-driven rain cannot provide the same opening as one rolled up on a dry day.
Choose a sheltered, shaded pitch where appropriate, keep vents clear of luggage and consider how much airflow remains when doors are closed. Neither fabric weight guarantees a cool interior or eliminates condensation.
In cooler weather, separate shelter comfort from sleeping warmth
A substantial fabric may change the feel of an enclosed tent, but a GSM number cannot tell you how warm you will sleep. Drafts, ventilation, tent volume, weather and your sleeping system all affect the experience. A mattress’s comfort or height does not establish its insulation value.
KingCamp’s KHAN page includes a manufacturer demonstration comparing 340g and 210g TC canvas during stove use. Treat it as a demonstration of that setup, rather than a promise of a particular temperature improvement at your campsite. A transferable comparison would need matching geometry, weather, ventilation, heat input and measurement conditions.
Keep appropriate ventilation and follow the supplied equipment instructions if using a compatible stove. A stove jack or an included stove is not a temperature rating, and a “4-season” product name is not a numerical wind or snow-load limit.
Living space is another kind of comfort
Think about sitting up on a cot, changing clothes and walking past a bed. Peak height tells you about one part of the tent; wall height and roof slope tell you more about usable space around the edge. A center pole can also affect where furniture fits.
As REI’s camping-tent buying guide explains, sleeping capacity does not include every comfort requirement. Plan the actual beds, bags and walking route instead of treating a person count as a furnished-room layout.
Is 340 GSM more durable than 210 GSM?
More material can be part of a durability-focused design, but GSM alone does not prove greater durability. Tear resistance, abrasion resistance, seam strength and resistance to weathering are separate properties. A heavier fabric with a weak seam or damaged coating can still become the weak point of a tent.
For example, TenCate’s PolyCotton technical data lists fabric weight, tensile strength and tearing strength separately. That is a useful model for reading specifications; those figures are not test results for KingCamp fabrics.
For frequent camping, inspect the whole structure:
- High-load areas: guyline attachment points, corners and pole contact areas need suitable reinforcement.
- Seams and closures: stitching, door zippers and mesh attachments experience repeated handling.
- Floor construction: ground contact and grit create different demands from those on the roof.
- Poles and anchoring: their design and correct setup matter independently of canvas weight.
- Repair support: check replacement-part availability and the repair process for the exact model before relying on years of future service.
Heavier canvas is a reasonable preference when you value a substantial shelter. It becomes a stronger buying decision when reinforced by construction details and a care routine you can actually maintain. It does not justify claims such as “62% stronger” or “lasts twice as long.”
Does heavier canvas mean better waterproofing?
No automatic conversion exists between GSM and waterproofness. The KHAN 340GSM page separately lists a double-sided coating and a fabric hydrostatic head of greater than 800 mm. It also lists a 510 g/m² PVC ground mat. These describe different components and properties; the floor’s GSM is not its waterproof rating.
When comparing a 210 GSM alternative, request its body and floor specifications separately. Avoid comparing one tent’s floor rating with another tent’s roof rating. Rain protection also depends on seams, closures, fabric condition and a correctly tensioned pitch.
How should car campers balance weight, durability and comfort?
Start with the hardest part of your trip. For some families, that is several wet days in a tent. For others, it is lifting a bulky bag from a low garage shelf into the trunk every Friday evening.
Frequent trips and long stays are different use cases
| Your usual trip | Sensible starting point | Reason to reconsider |
|---|---|---|
| One or two nights, changing campsites often | Compare 210 GSM designs first, then verify complete weight | A large 210 GSM tent can still be cumbersome; lighter fabric is only one contributor |
| Several nights at one drive-up campsite | Shortlist a well-built 340 GSM model | Loading and drying still have to work at both ends of the trip |
| One person handles most equipment | Prioritize manageable bags and a workable setup sequence | A shelter that feels comfortable once pitched may be difficult to move alone |
| Family stays with beds and furniture | Compare wall shape, access and usable layout alongside material | Capacity labels do not guarantee space for your preferred furniture |
| Repeated wet-weather trips | Prioritize protected ventilation, rain details and a drying plan | Neither GSM compensates for packing a damp tent into long-term storage |
| Limited space at home | Choose a tent you can fully open or spread out to dry | Extra fabric becomes a care burden if you have nowhere to dry it |
Before ordering, measure your vehicle’s loading opening, not just the empty cargo area. Include bedding, furniture and other equipment in your packing plan. If carrying components separately is permitted and practical, it can reduce the load per lift, but it does not reduce the total weight.
Which KingCamp options belong on your shortlist?
For a substantial canvas shelter: KingCamp KHAN 340GSM TC Canvas 4-Season Bell Tent
Both options below use the same official product title. The selected capacity identifies the size; it is not a separate model name invented for this comparison.
| Published specification | Khaki / 4-6 Person | Khaki / 8-10 Person |
|---|---|---|
| Tent fabric | 340 g/m² TC canvas | 340 g/m² TC canvas |
| Dimensions, L × W × H | 400 × 400 × 270 cm | 500 × 500 × 300 cm |
| Published weight | 32.95 kg / 72.6 lb | 43.2 kg / 95.2 lb |
| Packed size | 92 × 34 × 36 cm | 92 × 48 × 40 cm |
| Ground mat | 510 g/m² PVC | 510 g/m² PVC |
Choose the Khaki / 4-6 Person option when its actual layout meets your needs and the smaller bag suits your transport and storage arrangements. It is still a substantial 32.95 kg package.
Consider the Khaki / 8-10 Person option when you need the larger dimensions and can accommodate the wider packed bag. Its listed weight is 10.25 kg more, although the fabric GSM is unchanged. Size alone can therefore make a meaningful difference to handling.
Both list aluminum support poles, 9 mm steel ground stakes and a substantial PVC floor. Those details make them relevant candidates for a buyer prioritizing construction and repeated recreational use. They do not establish an unlimited service life or suitability for every storm. Allow room beyond the tent body for the complete guyline and anchoring layout.
For a 210g TC tent with bedding: KingCamp KHAN VILLA 3-in-1 Family Glamping Bundle
The KingCamp KHAN VILLA 3-in-1 Family Glamping Bundle lists a 210g TC polycotton tent together with a KingCamp CAMPER DELUX 45 Queen Air Mattress (With Built-In Pump) and a KingCamp SNOWFLAKE 300D Double Flannel Sleeping Bag.
This is a useful option to consider if you need a shelter and a bedding setup together. However, a 210g tent fabric does not make the entire bundle lighter than a standalone 340 GSM tent. Confirm the complete shipping or carry weights, bag sizes and mattress power requirements for your trip.
Also check how the bedding fits your group. A tent’s stated capacity and the sleeping capacity of one supplied mattress are different things; do not assume the bundle supplies a bed for every possible tent occupant.
For a tent-and-furniture package: KingCamp KHAN VILLA Tent Glamping 4-in-1 Bundle with Stove
The KingCamp KHAN VILLA Tent Glamping 4-in-1 Bundle with Stove currently lists the KHAN VILLA tent, a 2-person Oxford inflatable sofa, a LEMON C10 padded butterfly folding camping chair and a Surefire tent stove.
This package is worth considering when its included equipment matches your plan. If you already own suitable furniture, a standalone tent may avoid extra bulk. The pictured arrangement is a product display, not a stove-clearance or campsite setup diagram.
Make durability last beyond the first season
Care is part of the weight-versus-durability decision. A tent you can dry, store and maintain reliably is a better fit than one whose size makes those jobs impractical.
After a trip, remove grit and debris, inspect corners and attachment points, and follow the tent’s cleaning instructions. Before storage, check the underside of the floor, seams, folded hems, lines and the bag as well as the broad canvas panels. If you must pack wet to leave camp, reopen the tent for drying as soon as practical.
Do not assume that 210 GSM always dries a set number of hours faster than 340 GSM. Moisture level, coating, fabric construction, weather and how the tent is spread out all change drying conditions. Store by actual dryness rather than a fixed timer.
For repeated use, inspect emerging wear before the next trip instead of waiting for a failed zipper, loose attachment or damaged pole at camp. Ask about approved repairs early. Frequent camping does not require leaving a recreational tent erected continuously between trips.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 340 GSM tent 62% heavier than a 210 GSM tent?
No. Equal areas of 340 GSM fabric have about 62% more mass than 210 GSM fabric. The complete tent also includes its floor, support structure, stakes, hardware and bag, and the two tents may use different amounts of material.
Is 210 GSM too thin for regular camping?
GSM alone cannot answer that. A well-designed 210 GSM polycotton tent can be a reasonable regular-camping choice when its construction, weather suitability and handling requirements match your trips. Compare actual materials and support details rather than assuming lower mass means disposable quality.
Does 340 GSM stay cooler in summer and warmer in winter?
You cannot predict that result from GSM alone. Ventilation, solar exposure, fabric treatment, shelter volume and weather affect the interior. For sleeping warmth, use equipment appropriate to the conditions; neither GSM number is an insulation rating.
What should I choose if durability matters more than low weight?
Start by examining the KHAN 340GSM’s construction and selecting the smallest size that comfortably fits your layout. Then check that you can transport it, anchor it correctly and dry it at home. That gives you a practical durability-focused shortlist without pretending that fabric weight guarantees lifespan.
Should I buy the larger 340 GSM size for better durability?
Buy it for the extra space you need. Both listed sizes use 340 GSM TC canvas; the larger one adds dimensions and transport weight, not a higher GSM. More room is useful only if the campsite, vehicle and your handling arrangements can accommodate it.
Can I compare a bundle directly with a standalone tent?
Compare the shelter first, then the equipment package. Confirm the exact tent material, dimensions and carry weight, followed by the extra components and their packed sizes. A bundle may improve your overall camping setup without providing a heavier or more durable tent fabric.
